How do you set up Claude Team, step by step?
Do these in order. Each step takes a few clicks in Organization settings.
Choose someone who can approve spend. Each organization has one Primary Owner, and the role uses one of your paid seats. The current Primary Owner can transfer it from Organization settings > Members, and it can also be a service account that isn't tied to one person.
Go to claude.ai/login, enter a work email and choose Team during onboarding. Pick monthly or annual billing. If you already pay for an individual Claude plan on your work email, visit claude.ai/upgrade instead. Anthropic upgrades it in place and refunds the unused part of the old plan. Tick "Keep your personal account separate" if you see it and want your personal chats to stay put.
Put everyone on Standard at first. Give Premium seats to the 2 or 3 people who work in Claude all day. Admins can move people between seat types in Organization settings > Members, and new seats are prorated and charged right away.
Open Organization settings > Organization and access and list every domain your people use, including a public one like gmail.com if you need it. Then go to Members > Add member, or use Bulk add. Pending invitations take a seat immediately and expire after 21 days. Team organizations also get an invite link by default, so turn it off if you want to approve each person.
Owners and the Primary Owner can open Billing, buy seats, turn on usage credits and add custom connectors. Admins can manage members but can't open Billing. Give one more person the Owner role so a vacation or a departure can't lock you out of billing.
As an Owner, go to Organization settings > Connectors > Browse connectors and click Add to your team. Each person then signs in to the connector with their own account, so Claude reaches what that person can already open. A connector that uses a shared API key gives everyone that key's access, so check how each one authenticates. Microsoft 365 also needs a one-time consent from a Microsoft Entra Global Administrator.
As an Owner, open Organization settings > Usage and enable usage credits. You prepay for credits, then set a monthly limit for the whole organization and a limit for each person. Credits let people keep working after they reach their included weekly limit. When someone reaches their own limit, their credits pause until the month ends.
Open Members and check each person's seat tier. Open Usage and read the month-to-date spend column. Move heavy users to Premium, then reduce any unused seats before the next renewal.
What should you decide before you invite everyone?
Four choices shape the rest of your setup.
Who should be an Owner?
Two people: the Primary Owner and one backup. Admins can invite and remove members and move seat types, but only Owners and the Primary Owner can open Billing, buy seats, set spend limits and add custom connectors. If the person who set it all up leaves, a second Owner keeps the account running.
How do allowed domains work?
Every invitee needs an email on one of your allowed domains. If you want SSO, verify each domain by adding a DNS TXT record from Claude. Verifying alone doesn't change anyone's access. After it's done you can switch on Restrict organization creation, which stops people from creating new Claude organizations, including personal accounts, with your domain. Domain capture, which finds and migrates existing personal accounts, is Enterprise only per Anthropic's pricing page. On Team, people move their own personal account in by choice.
Should you turn on SSO?
Team includes it, so the cost is setup time. You need the Owner role and access to your domain's DNS settings, and your team needs an identity provider such as Okta or Google. Once SSO is on, invite links stop working and people join through your identity provider. If you don't run an identity provider, invite by email and skip SSO.
How many seats do you need?
One per person who will use Claude, with a minimum of 2. Ten Standard seats cost $200 a month on annual billing, or $250 billed monthly. Swap two of them for Premium seats and the annual bill is $360 a month. Seats can be added mid-term and reductions take effect at renewal, so start small and add.
